Mart (1838) show Gautier’s later, less extravagant tone, but still display a pleasing variety of forms, as do those in Espana (1845), which describe the stages in the poet’s tour of Spain in 1840, When the volume Emaux et Camees (Enamels and Cameos) w^as first published in 1852, it contained only eighteen pieces; later editions brought this number to forty-seven. This was to become Gautier’s most famous collection.

Enamels are small and unspectacular, but require a sure touch and have a permanent baked finish; cameos are carved with great effort from very hard and very durable stone. Similarly, the poet hopes that the care he has lavished on the expression of these
